The statistics on cases of deliberation of harmful information on the Internet and mobile devices, which have been published by the Korea Communications Standards Commission since its launch in 2008, include measures such as deletion, unsubscription, and blocking of access that are taken by the organization against problematic content. According to the statistics on deliberations announced on February 5, a total of 211,187 cases were subject to deliberation in 2016, an increase of 25.2% over the previous year.
Harmful information related to prostitution and obscenity recorded the largest number of cases of deliberation with 85,768, a 34.8% increase from the 55,906 cases in 2015. Access was blocked in 73,342 cases; related content was deleted in 5,021 cases; and unsubscription of user membership was applied in 3,227 cases (Table 1). The Korea Communications Standards Commission is making efforts to prevent the distribution of illegal information on the Internet through cooperation with related organizations and the police, reports from citizens, and the Commission’s own monitoring activities.
